Q&A with Samantha Filby - Dainty Doll INverurie

Samantha, can you share a little about your background?

I have always had a keen interest in the beauty industry and even worked for various cosmetic companies. In my spare time, I would attend beauty courses which then led to going self-employed in 2010. Although I learnt/offered a wide variety of treatments; I favoured doing eyebrows, so ended up narrowing my treatments to just brow and lash services.

In 2016 I expanded my services by learning permanent make up, this was great addition; particularly for clients that struggled with sparse brows or wanted to achieve a look that wasn’t possible for their natural brow.

What's a key part of your business?

Customer service is always one of my main priorities, I like to ensure every client that comes through my door feels at ease and comfortable to discuss exactly what they are looking for.

And, can you tell us about some of your treatments?

My most popular treatment would be HD Brows, this consists of: consultation, tinting, mapping, waxing, threading, tweezing and trimming. Although the treatment consists of the same 7 steps for every client, it is still completely bespoke to each individual.

What's been a great highlight for you?

One of my milestones would have been winning 'Stylist of the Month' for the company 'HD Brows', because of this, I got to work closely with the company by working on their stand at beauty exhibitions, being featured in one of their campaigns and getting to trial their new brow products.

What's it like now being based in INverurie?

I absolutely love having my business in the centre of Inverurie - I feel like everyone is extremely supportive with local businesses.

I'm not originally from Inverurie and, at first, was worried about how busy I would be...I can honestly say Dainty Doll is thriving in Inverurie.

Can you share some advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

My best bit of advice for anyone wanting to get involved in the beauty industry is - discover a beauty service you love to do and run with it! Specialising in brows has definitely benefited me more in my business - rather than when I offered a wide variety of services.

Any closing thoughts?

I find being self employed really rewarding as it has allowed me to network with some amazing like minded people. It also allows me to be creative and mould my business to exactly how I want it. Personally, my aspirations for the future would be to further my skills in the permanent makeup industry.
